How to get more Google reviews for your business

Your customers love you.
They say thank you. They come back. They recommend you to their friends.
And your Google profile still has 7 reviews.
That's not because your service is bad. It's because happy customers almost never leave a review unless someone asks them to.
Unhappy customers, on the other hand, don't need to be asked.
Here's how to fix that balance.
Why reviews matter more than you think
They decide who gets the call. Two businesses show up side by side on Google Maps. One has 9 reviews, the other has 140. You already know which one gets the WhatsApp.
They help you rank. Reviews are one of the signals Google uses to decide who appears on the map. More on that in Google Business Profile ranking factors.
AI reads them too. When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini for a recommendation, reviews are part of what it uses to decide whether your business is worth mentioning. We covered that in how to check if AI is recommending your business.
Step 1: Get your review link
Don't tell customers to "search for us on Google and find the review button".
Nobody will do that.
In your Google Business Profile, look for "Get more reviews" or "Ask for reviews". It gives you a short link that opens the review box directly.
Copy it. Save it somewhere you can paste it in two seconds.
Step 2: Ask at the right moment
Timing is everything.
The best time to ask is the moment the customer is happiest:
- Right after the job is done and they've seen the result
- When they say "thank you" or "very good service"
- When they come back for a second time
Not two weeks later when they've moved on with their lives.
Step 3: Make it ridiculously easy
The fewer steps, the more reviews.
Send the link on WhatsApp. Something short and human:
"Hi Mr Tan, thanks for choosing us! If you're happy with the job, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It really helps a small business like ours 🙏 [link]"
Or in BM:
"Hi Puan Aisyah, terima kasih sebab pilih kami! Kalau puas hati dengan servis kami, boleh tak tinggalkan review ringkas di Google? Sangat membantu bisnes kecil kami 🙏 [link]"
Put a QR code at your counter that opens the review link. Restaurants, salons, clinics and shops can do this today.
Add the link to your receipts or invoices.
Step 4: Reply to every review
Good or bad.
A short, genuine reply to a 5-star review shows future customers you actually care. A calm, professional reply to a 1-star review shows them you handle problems properly — and that matters more than a perfect score.
Never argue in the replies. Everyone can read them.
What not to do
Don't buy reviews. It's against Google's policies, and fake reviews can get removed or your profile flagged. We wrote a whole post on whether buying Google reviews is illegal in Malaysia.
Don't offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews. Google doesn't allow incentivised reviews either.
Don't only ask the customers you think are happy and quietly skip the rest. Selectively asking for positive reviews is also against Google's rules. Ask everyone.
Don't get 40 reviews in one week and then nothing for a year. A steady stream looks natural and keeps your profile fresh.
Make it a habit, not a campaign
The businesses with hundreds of reviews didn't run a special review campaign.
They just asked. Every customer. Every time.
Ask 10 customers a week, and even if only 3 follow through, that's over 150 reviews in a year.
