Monthly subscription vs one-time payment for web design

You're shopping for a website and you've noticed something.
Some web designers charge you once — RM3,000, RM8,000, RM15,000 — and the website is "yours."
Others charge monthly — RM375, RM500, RM800 a month — and you get a website plus ongoing support bundled together.
Which one is better?
The honest answer: it depends on your situation. But most small business owners get talked into the wrong model for the wrong reasons.
Here's the full breakdown.
What you're actually paying for in each model
Before comparing prices, understand what each model actually includes.
One-time payment: You pay a lump sum. The designer builds your website. Once it's live, that's it — the project is done and the designer moves on to their next client. Anything after that — updates, maintenance, fixing bugs, renewing hosting, SSL certificates — is either your problem or an additional charge.
Monthly subscription: You pay a recurring fee. The website is built and kept running for you — hosting, maintenance, security updates, content changes, and support are bundled into the monthly cost. The designer has ongoing skin in the game because you can cancel if the service isn't delivering.
Same end product on day one. Very different experience from month two onwards.
The real cost of a one-time payment website
A RM5,000 one-time website sounds straightforward.
But here's what nobody tells you upfront:
Hosting: RM50 – RM200/month depending on the provider and plan.
SSL certificate: Usually included with hosting, but not always. Without it, Google flags your site as "Not Secure" — which kills trust and rankings instantly.
Domain renewal: RM50 – RM150/year.
Plugin licences: If your site runs on WordPress with premium plugins (SEO tools, page builders, security, backups), those renew annually. Easily RM500 – RM1,500/year depending on what's installed.
Maintenance: WordPress core, themes, and plugins need regular updates. Skip them and your site becomes a security risk. Hire someone to do it — RM100 – RM300/month. Do it yourself — good luck.
Changes and updates: Need to update your pricing? Add a new service? Fix something that broke after an update? Each request back to your original designer is usually billed separately, often at RM100 – RM300 per hour.
Add all of that up over 12 months and your RM5,000 "one-time" website has quietly cost you RM7,000 – RM10,000 or more — with zero ongoing support included.
The real cost of a monthly subscription website
A monthly subscription model bundles everything.
For a service like ours at RM375/month, what's actually included:
- Website design and development
- Hosting and SSL
- Domain
- Maintenance and security updates
- Content updates when you need them
- Technical support when something breaks
No surprise invoices. No "that's not in scope." No chasing a designer who's moved on to their next project.
Over 12 months that's RM4,500 — which is already competitive with a mid-range one-time build, except you never had to fork out a lump sum and you have someone actively keeping the site running.
The one-time model works — for the right business
To be fair, a one-time payment website makes sense in certain situations.
You have a dedicated internal team that can handle hosting, updates, and maintenance without paying someone external.
You're a larger business with an IT department or an in-house developer who can take ownership of the site after handover.
You want complete technical ownership — your own server, your own codebase, full control over every decision.
If any of that sounds like you, a one-time build from a capable agency makes sense. Budget RM8,000 – RM20,000 for something properly built, and factor in the ongoing costs separately.
The subscription model works — for small businesses
If you're a small business owner in Malaysia who just needs a professional website that works, ranks on Google, and doesn't cause you headaches — a monthly subscription almost always makes more financial sense.
Low upfront cost. Predictable monthly expense. Someone responsible for keeping it alive.
You focus on running your business. The website gets handled.
The only caveat: make sure you understand the contract terms. What happens if you cancel? Do you keep the domain? Can you export your content? Who owns what?
A legitimate subscription web designer should have clear answers to all of these.
What to watch out for with both models
One-time payment red flags:
- No clarity on what's included post-launch
- Hosting set up on the designer's own account
- No handover documentation
- Vague about plugin and hosting costs going forward
Subscription model red flags:
- Locked into a long contract with no exit clause
- You don't own the domain even after years of paying
- No clear scope of what "maintenance" and "support" actually means
- Price seems too low to be sustainable — corners will eventually be cut
