How much should you spend on Meta Ads as a small business owner?

You boosted a post for RM50, got a few likes, zero customers, and decided Meta Ads "don't work for my business."
Here's the truth: boosting a post isn't Meta Ads. That's throwing confetti and hoping someone buys something.
Let's talk about what an actual budget looks like — and why most small business owners get this completely wrong.
There's no universal number — but there's a sane starting point
Every industry is different.
A bakery in Subang Jaya doesn't need the same budget as a renovation company chasing RM50,000 projects.
But here's a realistic baseline for small businesses running Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) in Malaysia:
- Minimum viable budget: RM800 – RM1,000/month
- Comfortable starting budget: RM1,500 – RM2,500/month
- Higher-ticket businesses (renovation, education, medical): RM3,000+/month
Below RM800? The algorithm doesn't have enough data or budget to find the right people for you.
You're not running a campaign. You're just feeding the algorithm scraps and wondering why it's starving.
Stop asking "how much will this cost?" Ask "what's a customer worth to me?"
This is where small business owners trip up the most.
They fixate on the ad spend number instead of the return.
Say you sell skincare. A new customer's first purchase is worth RM150, and many come back to buy again.
If you spend RM1,000 and get 10 new customers, that's RM1,500 in immediate revenue — before repeat purchases even count.
That's not a cost. That's customer acquisition paying for itself.
If your offer and margins make sense, Meta Ads should make you money, not just spend it.
Why your Meta Ads budget disappears with nothing to show for it
You can have a perfectly reasonable budget and still burn through it with zero results. Here's how:
Boosting posts instead of running real campaigns. The blue "Boost Post" button is not a strategy. It's Meta's way of taking your money with the least effort from their side.
Targeting too broad or too narrow. "Everyone in Malaysia" wastes your budget on people who will never buy. "Women 25-30 who like yoga and Korean dramas" is so narrow Meta can't even spend your budget properly.
Using the same ad creative for months. Ad fatigue is real. The same image and copy shown to the same audience for weeks stops converting — and you keep paying anyway.
No pixel, no tracking, no idea what's working. If you haven't installed the Meta Pixel on your website, you're not retargeting anyone, and you have no idea which ads are actually driving sales versus just likes.
Sending traffic to your Facebook or Instagram page instead of a website. Comments and DMs do not scale. A proper landing page does the selling for you, 24/7, without you replying to messages at 11pm.
What you should actually be watching
Forget likes and reach. These are the numbers that tell you if your budget is working:
- Cost Per Click (CPC) — what you're paying for each click to your site
- Click-Through Rate (CTR) — are people actually interested in your ad, or just scrolling past
- Cost Per Result (CPR) — cost per lead, purchase, or WhatsApp message, depending on your goal
- Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) — for every RM1 spent, how many ringgit came back
If your ROAS is below 1, you're losing money. If it's 3-4x or higher, you've found something worth scaling.
The uncomfortable truth about Meta Ads budgets
A small budget with sharp targeting and good creative will always beat a big budget thrown at the wrong audience with lazy copy.
We've seen home businesses in Klang Valley generate consistent orders on RM800/month because the targeting was tight and the creative actually stopped the scroll.
We've also seen businesses dump RM4,000 in a month into boosted posts and end up with nothing but vanity likes from people who were never going to buy.
It's never just about the number. It's about whether someone actually knows what they're doing with it.
