How long does it take to build a website?

You asked three web designers how long your website will take.
One said 3 days. One said 3 weeks. One said "depends".
All three could be telling the truth.
How long a website takes depends far less on the designer's speed than most people think — and far more on what kind of website it is, and what's sitting on your side of the table.
Here's the honest breakdown.
The short answer
For a small business in Malaysia, these are realistic ranges:
| Type of website | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Single landing page for a promotion or ad campaign | 3 – 7 days |
| Standard business website (5 – 8 pages) | 1 – 4 weeks |
| Online shop with payment gateway | 3 – 8 weeks |
| Custom system (booking, member portal, dashboard) | 2 – 6 months |
Notice how wide those ranges are.
The gap between the fast end and the slow end is almost never the design work. It's everything around it.
What actually slows a website down
1. Waiting for content. This is the big one. The design is ready, the layout is ready — and then everyone waits three weeks for the business owner to send photos, the "about us" paragraph, and the list of services.
Your website can't launch with placeholder text on it. Whoever is holding the content is holding the timeline.
2. Too many decision-makers. You like the blue. Your partner wants green. Your sister-in-law thinks the font is too small.
Every extra opinion is another round of revisions. Pick one person who has the final say.
3. Domain and hosting stuck with someone else. If your old agency or a former staff member registered your domain, getting access can take days or weeks. Sort this out first. We explained how here.
4. Payment gateway approval. For online shops, the payment gateway needs to approve your business before you can accept payments. That involves documents and checks on their side, and you can't rush it.
5. Scope creep. "Can we also add a booking system?" Halfway through the project.
Sure. But that's a different project with a different timeline.
How to get your website done faster
Before you even contact a web designer, get these ready:
- Your logo, in the best quality you have.
- Real photos of your business, your team and your work.
- A list of services or products, with prices if you want them shown.
- Your contact details — WhatsApp number, email, address, opening hours.
- 2 or 3 websites you like, so the designer knows your taste.
- Your domain login, if you already own one.
A business owner who walks in with all of this can genuinely have a site live in days, not weeks.
Red flags on timelines
"Full business website in 24 hours." Possible only if it's a template with your name swapped in. Ask to see what you're actually getting.
3 months for a 5-page website, with no updates. That's not a complex project. That's a project at the bottom of someone's to-do list.
No timeline at all. A professional should be able to tell you roughly how long it takes, what they need from you, and when.
Speed matters less than you think
A website that launches a week later but brings in enquiries for years is a better deal than one that launches tomorrow and does nothing.
Don't pick a designer only because they promised the fastest delivery. Pick the one who asks the most questions about your business.
