Why your Google Business Profile might get suspended

Just the other day, a business owner came to me for help.
She mentioned her Google Business Profile has been suspended.
No warnings or reasonings from Google whatsoever.
Just like that, her business stopped getting customer walk-ins and inquiries for the 2 weeks she tried fixing it herself.
Eventhough we managed to get it back for her, more bad news came - all 200+ of her Google reviews were wiped.
Now she has to start from scratch with everything.
Here's what happened, and how your Google Business Profile might also get suspended in an instant like that.
1. Google thinks you're a fake business
Google’s #1 priority is removing spam.
And if your Business Profile looks shady, you’re getting axed.
Here’s how you might be triggering a suspension without realizing it:
❌ Your address looks suspicious – Using a fake address? Google doesn’t like that. Use a real, verifiable address.
❌ Keyword-stuffed business name – If your business name is something like “Best Cheap Plumber Near Me Fast Service 24/7”, congrats, you look like a scam. Use your real business name and minimal keywords.
❌ Too many profile edits at once – Changing your business name, address, and phone number all in one go? Google gets nervous and might suspend you, thinking your account was hacked by a 3rd party.
2. You violated Google’s guidelines (without knowing it)
Google has strict rules on Business Profiles, but most business owners never bother to read them.
🚨 Common reasons Google suspends profiles:
- Running multiple profiles for the same business (trying to game the system? Google will catch you.)
- Using virtual offices, co-working spaces, or P.O. boxes (unless you meet customers there).
- Your category is misleading – If you’re a “consultant” but list yourself as a “law firm,” expect problems.
- Fake reviews – Yes, Google is smart enough to catch this.
3. Your reviews look suspicious (and Google hates that)
If Google sees sudden spikes in reviews, especially from accounts that never leave reviews, you’re in trouble.
💡 How to avoid review-related suspensions:
✅ Get real customer reviews, gradually. 10 real reviews > 100 fake ones.
✅ Ask different customers over time—not all at once.
✅ DO NOT use review exchange groups. Google will catch on.
4. Google suspended you by mistake (yes, it happens)
Sometimes, Google’s system just screws up and suspends legit businesses for no reason.
If you think this is you, here’s what to do:
1️⃣ Check your email – Google usually tells you why you were suspended. (Although the reason they gave may be vague)
2️⃣ Submit a reinstatement request here.
3️⃣ Provide proof – Business license, utility bills, photos of your storefront, etc. The more proof, the better.
4️⃣ Be patient – It can take a few days to weeks for Google to respond.
