How to Rank Higher on Google Maps

Getting found on Google Maps means getting more customers, period (assuming your market has demand).
If you’re not showing up in the top 3 (the “map pack”), you’re leaving leads on the table.
So let's do better.
Here’s exactly how to rank higher on Google Maps and dominate local search.
1. Optimize your Google Business Profile (GBP)
This is the first and easiest thing to do, and also the foundation of good SEO.
✅ Fill out ALL the info: name, address, phone, website, hours, and services
✅ Upload high-quality photos (of your location, products, team, etc.)
✅ Use keywords naturally in your descriptions (e.g. “plumber in Shah Alam”)
2. Get consistent, high-quality reviews
I've seen a lot of businessses who can rank higher if they just got 20-30 more reviews.
But the excuse they give?
❌ Oh I forgot.
❌ I'm shy or embarrassed to ask.
❌ I didn't think it was important.
But here's the thing...
Google rewards businesses that others trust.
You've probably heard this or even done it yourself...
But your customers read your reviews before buying from you.
So start getting reviews!
✅ Ask happy customers to leave a review
✅ Use a direct link to make it easy
✅ Respond to every review (yes, even the bad ones)
💡 The more recent and positive reviews, the higher your total ranking score.
3. Keep your info accurate and consistent
This should be a no-brainer.
If you're running a salon but put your info as a bakery.
You don't deserve to show up on Google at all.
Google checks your business info to show people when they search for related services
SO MAKE SURE YOURS IS ACCURATE
❌ Inconsistent name, address, phone number means lower trust, sketchy business
✅ Make sure your info is the same on your website, directories, and social media
4. Add local keywords to your content
If you want to show up for “dentist in Subang Jaya”, say that on your profile and your site.
This is also a neat little secret tip most business owners or agencies don't know.
✅ Add location-based keywords in:
- Business description
- Service pages
- Blog posts
These would significantly boost your overall score, and make you rank higher than those who does not add local keywords.
5. Post regularly on your GBP
Most people ignore this, because it's "too much work".
But honestly, it's almost the same thing as posting on your social media already (which you are already doing).
This is something that probably takes 10 extra seconds to do, but trust me - it helps, A LOT.
✅ Add weekly updates, offers, or photos
✅ Share tips, news, or promotions
✅ Post ANYTHING
💡 Active profiles get more attention from Google (and customers), because it tells them YOU'RE STILL OPEN!
6. Get listed in directories
This is more technical and would probably cost you a little.
Hence why it's avoided by most people, because they can't see the immediate effects.
But building local backlinks can help to boost credibility.
Compared to the cost, it's a very worthwhile thing to invest in.
✅ Add your business to local directories (e.g. Yelp, Foursquare, Yellow Pages)
✅ Use the same name, address, and phone number everywhere
But my advice is to start looking at these ONLY when you're done with everything else mentioned above.
Too much work or too technical for you?
