How many pages does your website actually need

How many pages does your website actually need cover image

I recently had a client ask me a simple question:

“How many pages should my website have?”

And I thought, why not share the answer with everyone?

Some agencies will tell you: “The more pages, the better.”

Others will upsell you: “You need at least 10–15 pages to look professional.”

Here’s the truth most people don’t want to hear:

Your website doesn’t need a lot of pages.
It needs the right pages.

Let me break it down properly.

1. The minimum every business website needs

At the absolute minimum, every serious business website should have 4 core pages.

Home, Services, About, Contact.

Home

This is where people decide:

  • Who you are
  • What you do
  • Whether they should keep reading or leave

Your home page should clearly answer: “Is this business relevant to me?”

If it doesn’t, the rest of your site doesn’t matter.

Services

This is where you explain:

  • What you actually offer
  • Who it’s for
  • How it helps the customer

Not just a list of services. Explain the value, not just the features.

About

This isn’t your life story.

This page exists to answer one question: “Why should I trust you?”

People want to know who they’re dealing with. Especially before they contact you.

Contact

If people can’t reach you easily, you lose leads.

Simple as that.

Make it obvious. Make it fast. Make it idiot-proof.

2. When more pages actually make sense

More pages are useful when they serve a purpose.

Examples:

  • Separate service pages (for SEO)
  • Blog posts (to rank on Google)
  • Portfolio or case studies
  • FAQs that reduce repetitive enquiries
  • Location pages for local SEO

Each page should:

  • Target a specific keyword
  • Answer a specific question
  • Solve a specific problem

If it doesn’t do any of that, it’s just noise.

3. Why “more pages” is bad advice

Some agencies push more pages because:

  • It sounds impressive
  • They can charge more
  • Clients think “bigger = better”

But here’s what actually happens:

❌ Thin, useless pages
❌ Duplicate content
❌ Confusing navigation
❌ Worse user experience
❌ Poor SEO performance

Google prefers quality over quantity.

One strong page beats five weak ones every time.

4. Small website, big results (yes, it’s possible)

Some of the highest-converting websites I’ve seen have:

  • 4–6 pages total
  • Clear messaging
  • Strong copy
  • Clear calls-to-action

Meanwhile, I’ve seen 20-page websites that:

  • Get zero traffic
  • Get zero enquiries
  • Exist just to “look complete”

Pages don’t make money. Strategy does.

5. So… how many pages do you really need?

Here’s a simple rule of thumb 4 would be enough for most small businesses.

Any more should be justified by purpose.

Start small. Build strong. Add pages only when there’s a reason.

Final thoughts

Instead of asking: “How many pages should I have?”

Start asking: “What does my customer need to see before they trust me?”
